About Us

 

Nirmala Niketan, College of Home Science, is a Christian Institution, managed by a Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and a Public Trust Act 1950 and all of those who are members of the congregation of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in India. The Society is managed by a governing Body whose Ex-officio Chairperson is the Provincial of the Province of India of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary.
 

Location:

The College is located in the heart of the Mumbai city and is easily accessible since it is within walking distances both from the Western and Central railway terminus.
 

Vision of the college:

The college aims at the total development of the Indian Women, by providing learning opportunities to empower her with knowledge, skills and attitudes, to face personal and professional challenges with confidence, inculcating values of respect, commitment and concern for the service of others, thereby enabling her to make a positive contribution to the society in the 21st century.

Milestones of the College:
1955

The College of Home Science started its Certificate course in Home Science
1969 Introduction of Three Year B.Sc. (Home Science) program
1972 Started M.Sc. in Human Development & Foods & Nutrition
1975

Affiliation to University of Mumbai as the only Home Science College One year Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics & Applied Nutrition.
1976 Started M.Sc. in Textiles & Clothing
1979 Introduced Specialisations in 3 branches at T.Y.B.Sc. level
1985 Introduction of 4th Branch at T.Y.B.Sc. level
1993 Renaming the specializations’ at the UG level
1996 Introduction of Ph.D. in Home Science for 3 branches
2003 NAAC Accreditation B+ (78%)
2005

Permanent recognition for Ph.D in Home Science.
2006

Introduction of UGC recognized Certificate course in Food Processing & Preservation
2007

Introduced Value added courses - Nutrition & Exercise for Fitness, Visual Merchandising, Entrepreneurship in Textile Craft - Obtained University Recognition
2008

University approval obtained for two self-financed Masters programs. These courses will come into effect from June 2009 viz.

  • M.Sc. in Food Processing and Preservation

  • M.Sc. in Sports Nutrition.
