The Department offers a specialization in Foods, Nutrition & Dietetics at the T.Y.B.Sc. Home Science level. At the post Graduate level, the department offers a Master’s program in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics. In addition, it also runs two self-financed Master’s programs- Food Processing and Preservation & Sports Nutrition and a one year post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Applied Nutrition. A Ph.D. program in Home Science is also offered by the Department.
It has MOUs for collaborative activities with other academic institutes such as Jai Hind College, Somaiya College and MGM Institute of Health Sciences. Students are also taken for Industrial visits, rural camps, conferences and seminars. Several projects have been undertaken by the Department funded by UGC, University of Mumbai and other prestigious institutes. It also undertakes consultancy projects for industries and other organizations.
The department recognizes research as an essential component of academics and assures that the student is ensured a sound research background. Varied topics covering different areas of nutrition like extension education, food product development and clinical nutrition are taken up by the students. Students are encouraged to and have participated in research related forums like Avishkar, AARYA, UTKARSH (instituted by the Indian Dietetic Association, Mumbai Chapter, one of the collaborators of the department for Excellence in Research) and in scientific conferences organized by different esteemed institutions. The department has instituted the Nirmal Seva Award for the research project that benefits the community the most and a special segment for undergraduate research at the TY level has been initiated.
